- CANCOM Received the Award for Its Intelligent Documentation Project at ASYS in the Process Management Category
- The solution uses AI to automate manufacturing documentation, reduce manual effort, and improve the quality and consistency of documentation processes
- An enhanced Version 2.0, which automates additional processes, is already in the planning stages
CANCOM was awarded the “Excellent” rating for the project “Intelligent Manufacturing Documentation: ASYS Begins Its AI Journey with CANCOM” at the 2026 Best of Technology Award hosted by WirtschaftsWoche. The solution impressed the jury in the “Process Management” category and was honored at the awards ceremony on September 3 in Düsseldorf. The award recognizes innovative technologies and outstanding digitalization projects that create measurable added value for companies.
The starting point for the project was the optimization of a central documentation process in ASYS’s manufacturing operations. The company, a leading global provider of automation solutions for electronics manufacturing, sought to make the capture and storage of production-related images and supporting documentation more efficient. The solution is based on a mobile application that captures photos and accompanying documents, automatically extracts relevant information, and files it correctly and directly. A multimodal vision-language model processes image and text information together, thereby reducing manual steps, sources of error, and the documentation workload.
From the Initial AI Idea to a Productive Solution
The project emerged from an AI Discovery Workshop and was implemented as a deliberately chosen quick-win use case. In less than four weeks, CANCOM developed an initial productive proof of concept that immediately added value to day-to-day manufacturing operations. With this award-winning project, CANCOM underscores its AI expertise and demonstrates how AI applications can be successfully developed—from the identification of suitable use cases to their productive deployment in business processes.
“This award validates our approach of not viewing AI as an end in itself, but rather deploying it strategically where it solves specific business challenges. Together with ASYS, we have demonstrated how modern AI technologies can be productively integrated into industrial processes in a short time and create measurable benefits,” says Christian Nicolussi, AI Team Leader at CANCOM.
Fatma Hohlfeld, Key Account Manager at CANCOM, adds: “The project with ASYS shows that the successful use of AI always depends on a company’s individual requirements. The key is to identify the use cases with the greatest added value and develop tailor-made solutions based on them. This is exactly how concrete challenges lead to measurable improvements—and often serve as the starting point for a more comprehensive AI transformation.”
Award-Winning Project with Future Potential
Building on the successful project, CANCOM and ASYS are already working on an enhanced 2.0 version of the solution. The goal is to automate additional documentation and process steps and to systematically expand the potential applications of AI within manufacturing. The award-winning submission refers to the original version of the solution, which marked the beginning of ASYS’s AI transformation. The current further development builds on this experience and significantly expands the scope of application.
