Since October 2021, CANCOM and its partner DEUTIM have been implementing a reforestation project in Rotenburg an der Fulda. By establishing a sustainable mixed forest, climate-damaging CO2 is bound and local biodiversity is promoted. This commitment is part of CANCOM's Group-wide sustainability strategy, which aims to bring the company closer to CO2 neutrality, step by step.
Climate change is causing particular difficulties for monocultures such as spruce forests, which are especially susceptible to drought and pests. One example is the forest in Rotenburg an der Fulda, where the long dry periods of recent years have significantly damaged around 600 hectares of forest. CANCOM supports reforestation with the goal of establishing a healthy and more climate-stable mixed forest. Forests with a variety of trees are able to cope better with the changed climatic conditions and once again create habitats rich in species.
CANCOM has chosen the location for the initiative deliberately: The area is geographically located exactly between CANCOM's sites in Cologne, Hanover, Leipzig and Frankfurt. To implement the reforestation, CANCOM has enlisted a partner that specializes in such projects: DEUTIM supports private, state and municipal forest owners in Germany in establishing and maintaining more climate-stable mixed forests, with the goal of storing CO2. With the mixed forest plantations, DEUTIM creates a site-appropriate, high-performance CO2 reservoir for CANCOM over a period of five years.
Reforestation started in the fall of 2021, with around 5,000 to 6,000 spruce and Douglas fir seedlings planted. In the first spring months of this year, the conifers will be supplemented by hardwoods such as beech, oak, and maple, which will ultimately complete the mixed forest. The project got off to a promising start, so CANCOM has decided to further expand its involvement: CANCOM has been a DEUTIM Gold Partner since the beginning of the year, increasing its CO2 storage to 2,000 tons of CO2.
