  • eco acts as a political lobby and impulse generator on current topics in all areas of digitalisation
  • Within the scope of their membership, eco and CANCOM shape the development of the Internet, promote new technologies and infrastructures and form framework conditions

CANCOM looks back on 25 years of membership in the eco – Association of the Internet Industry. As part of the Internet Security Days 2022 organized by eco at Phantasialand in Brühl on 29 and 30 September 2022, the association ceremoniously presented CANCOM with an anniversary certificate.

The eco – Association of the Internet Industry has been playing a key role in shaping the Internet since 1995. In that year, the world's largest Internet node to date, DE-CIX, was founded in Frankfurt am Main. Since then, the eco association has been responsible for its smooth, provider-neutral operation. The background of joining eco 25 years ago was that direct access to DE-CIX is crucial for an innovative Network Service Provider (NSP). Today, eco has long seen itself not only as the operator of DE-CIX, but rather as the voice of the medium-sized Internet industry and, in this function as an interest group, represents its members towards politicians and international bodies.

With over 1,100 members and a global network in business, politics and science, eco today offers an important discussion platform. "The digital transformation and especially the expansion of the digital infrastructure should have top priority in a high-tech country like Germany," explains Petra Trost-Gürtner, Executive Vice President at CANCOM. Nevertheless, in her eyes, this topic still does not have the appropriate priority for politicians in this country - most recently, the Corona pandemic had exposed numerous weak points in the education and health sectors alone. "A strong association like eco, which articulates and demands the justified interests of the medium-sized Internet and IT industry towards politicians, for example, is more important than ever for the future of this country - especially in times of crisis like today. We are therefore looking forward to the next 25 years as a member of the eco association!", Trost-Gürtner continues.

One of the downsides of digitalization, however, is the growing threat caused by cyber criminals. This is one of the reasons why the topic of IT security has the highest priority from eco's point of view, which is why the association has been organising the Internet Security Days every year since 2010. In September, eco welcomed around 250 guests who learned about current threats and new strategies for more cybersecurity. On the sidelines, eco presented Jesper Juhl Schulz, Business Development Manager in the Competence Center Security at CANCOM, with an anniversary certificate to mark 25 years of membership.
